A car wash tunnel may seem like one of the last places you’d expect a traffic violation, but for one Colorado woman, it became an unexpected reality.

This past summer, Arlene Branham, 78, received a citation for careless driving after her vehicle bumped into a Colorado state trooper’s car while inside a car wash tunnel.

What Happened?

According to KUSA-TV Denver, Branham was visiting a car wash for the first time. She failed to notice a sign instructing drivers to place their car in neutral before entering the drive-thru tunnel. As a result, her car moved forward and lightly tapped the vehicle in front of her—unfortunately, a Colorado State Trooper’s vehicle.

The incident caused “very minor damage” to both cars, but Branham was ticketed for careless driving. The penalty? A $169 fine and four points on her license.

“I just felt like it wasn’t right that they gave me the ticket,” Branham said. “I mean, there was no damage. We weren’t even probably going half a mile an hour. It just seemed wrong.”

The Legal Perspective

While tickets for incidents on private property are uncommon, they are not unheard of. The Colorado State Police can issue citations on private property for violations such as:

  • Unsafe backing
  • Careless driving
  • Reckless driving
  • Driving under the influence (DUI)

In Branham’s case, the incident occurred at the Cobblestone Car Wash in Arvada, Colorado.

What Drivers Should Know

Branham’s story serves as a cautionary tale for car wash users, especially those unfamiliar with automated systems. To avoid similar situations:

  1. Read the Signs: Follow posted instructions, including setting your car to neutral or removing your hands from the steering wheel.
  2. Ask for Help: If you’re unsure about the process, ask an attendant for guidance before entering the tunnel.
  3. Be Aware of State Laws: Traffic violations on private property can vary depending on state laws and officer discretion.

Final Thoughts

While Branham’s citation may seem surprising, it highlights the importance of understanding and following car wash protocols. Even in a controlled environment like a car wash tunnel, mishaps can happen—and as Branham learned, the consequences may extend beyond minor vehicle damage.
